Luxurious 14-Day Journey: From Marrakech through Zagora and Merzouga

Day 1
Arrival in Marrakech airport and transfer to Marrakech
From the moment you arrive in Morocco, our agency will be by your side. Our team will welcome you at Marrakech Menara Airport and provide a comfortable private transfer to your riad in the medina, your home for the first three nights. After check-in, enjoy free time until you unwind for the night, depending on your arrival time.

Day 2
Marrakech
On the first day, you’ll have caught a glimpse of Marrakech’s charm, whether from the car or on an initial stroll. But today, we dive deeper into the city’s rich history, exploring its most iconic landmarks. Once the capital of the Almoravid, Almohad, and Saadi dynasties, Marrakech has flourished over centuries, leaving behind a legacy of stunning monuments.
An official guide will lead us through these historical treasures, unveiling the stories behind Jemaa el-Fna Square, the Koutoubia Mosque, the Saadian Tombs, and the Bahia Palace. We’ll navigate through winding alleys, lively souks, and timeless corners that preserve the city’s essence.
Beyond the medina, Marrakech boasts modern neighborhoods like Gueliz and attractions such as the Majorelle Gardens and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. The afternoon offers the perfect opportunity to explore these at your own pace before returning to the riad for a well-earned rest.

Day 3
Marrakech - Essaouira - Marrakech
A two-week journey through Morocco wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Essaouira, which is why this circuit includes it as a day trip on the third day. After breakfast, we set off for this coastal gem, returning in the evening to spend another night at the riad in Marrakech.
Along the way, we’ll pass through vast argan forests, home to the trees that produce Morocco’s famed argan oil. Despite its global reputation, the oil is still extracted using traditional methods, which we’ll witness firsthand at local cooperatives along the route.
Essaouira, once known as Mogador under Portuguese rule, greets us with its Atlantic breeze. The city’s maritime fortress, Skala, still stands, sheltering the medina with its vibrant souks, mosques, synagogues, and bustling fishing port. If the weather permits, a dip in its inviting beaches is also an option.
At the designated time, our driver will take you back to Marrakech for a final night in the riad before the journey continues.

Day 4
Marrakesh - High Atlas - Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate
On this day of circuit, we leave Marrakech and begin our journey through the lands located further south of the Atlas. A trip that will take us through the most important pre-Saharan valleys and, of course, the desert. In these days of circuit we will not adopt a linear and direct itinerary, but we will take detours, make stops and take the most appropriate route to discover the most spectacular places of this vast region.
To reach it, it will be necessary to cross the High Atlas, the highest part of this mountain range, whose main port is the imposing Tizi n’Tichka pass. This environment remains snowy several months of the year and is the border between two areas of great contrast: to the north, the valleys of wild nature and villages embedded in the mountains, and to the south, bare slopes and uninhabited by the rigors of the climatic conditions.
In Ait Ben Haddou, the first visit of the day, we will get in touch with the difficult climatic and demographic reality of the area, but at the same time we will admire the uniqueness of this walled village, built by the Berber tribes of the area to serve the caravan routes that connected Marrakech with Timbuktu, mainly. Today, in addition to attracting the attention of curious and intrepid tourists, it also attracts film and television blockbusters, such as Game of Thrones.
Shortly after we will arrive in Ouarzazate, a city also closely linked to cinema because of its filming studios. But in our case, the main attraction will be the kasbah of Taourirt, another magnificent example of Berber architecture, in this case as a castle-palace of the powerful El Glaoui family: adobe structure, refined interiors with ceramics, wood and plaster … Definitely a very interesting visit before taking dinner at the hotel and retire to rest in the rooms.

Day 5
Ouarzazate - Valley of Roses - Dades Valley
On the fifth day, our journey leads us through two remarkable pre-Saharan valleys, where rugged mountains blend with lush oases of palm groves and cultivated fields. These serene landscapes thrive thanks to the gentle rivers that, though slow-flowing, provide the essential moisture for agriculture.
Our first stop is the Valley of the Roses, named for the countless rose bushes that flourish in and around its villages. Rose cultivation is a vital livelihood for the local communities, and each spring, the region celebrates the Kelaa M’Gouna Festival in honor of this cherished flower. The damascena rose, known for its delicate pink hue, is the most common variety, though other colors bloom during the flowering season.
From there, we continue to the Dades Valley, part of the legendary Route of the Thousand Kasbahs, where centuries-old Berber adobe fortresses punctuate the landscape. One of the most captivating sights along the way is the Dades Gorges, where a winding road snakes dramatically through the canyon, creating breathtaking views and picture-perfect moments.
As the day comes to a close, we arrive in a charming village, where we’ll settle into a traditional riad for a restful night and a delightful dinner.

Day 6
Dades Valley - Todra Gorges - Zagora
The wonders we explored in the Valley of the Roses and Dades Valley were just the beginning. On this sixth day, our journey continues through more breathtaking landscapes as we travel by road through Morocco’s diverse terrain.
Our first stop is the Todra Gorges, a stunning rocky canyon with towering vertical walls. While a paradise for climbers, its beauty is just as mesmerizing from below. We’ll take a leisurely walk along the Todra River, the force behind this natural masterpiece, exploring its winding banks and hidden corners.
Nearby, we pass through Tinghir, a town that embodies the charm and richness of the region. From here, we head south toward another extraordinary landscape—the Draa Valley. This vast oasis stretches along the Draa River, forming one of Africa’s largest palm groves, spanning an incredible 150 km.
Amid this lush haven in an otherwise arid landscape, we reach Zagora, a picturesque desert town that once served as a key stop for ancient trade caravans. Its adobe kasbah played a crucial role in protecting both merchants and residents. Tonight, we settle into a charming riad in Zagora, where we’ll enjoy dinner and a restful night.

Day 7
Zagora - Rissani - Merzouga - Erg Chebbi Dunes
After several days traveling through the beautiful and amazing pre-Saharan valleys, the day finally arrives to reach the pure Pashar desert. On this seventh day of the circuit we will continue our route by road through peaceful villages, abandoned kasbahs and small bare mountains. But now the landscape becomes even more arid, until we reach Rissani.
This town is one of the most characteristic of the region, for its historical medina and for the popular atmosphere that reigns in its old town. It will not be unusual to find donkeys parked at the gates of the medina or a market of traditional stalls selling spices, handmade items or Berber pizzas.
After visiting this small town, we will continue a few more kilometers by road to Merzouga, the town that gives its name to the most fascinating area of the Sahara desert in Morocco. And it is because of the sand dunes that extend around it. We will travel by camel, as tradition dictates, guided by the person in charge of the animals, ‘heir’ of the mastery of the Touareg in this work.
The end of this camel ride is the luxury tented camp that will host us for the night. They are Berber tents equipped with the maximum comfort, with a common area where we will be welcomed with a welcome tea and a fire that gives a familiar and warm touch to the atmosphere. After dinner and contemplation of the stars at night, we will rest to recharge our batteries after an intense day and face another similar day the next morning

Day 8
Erg Chebbi Dunes - Merzouga - Visit to nomads - Khamlia - Merzouga
The eighth day begins in a special way: the lights come on gradually and with shades of a thousand colors on the dunes of Erg Chebbi, so that getting up early to see it is an effort that is worthwhile. Moments after dawn we will have breakfast in the tents camp and return to Merzouga.
From Merzouga we will start an off-road tour through places of great uniqueness in the environment. The first of these is Khamlia, a small village whose main interest is in music and the people who make it possible: the inhabitants of this place are descendants of former slaves brought from across the Sahara and their best means of expression are the Gnawa rhythms and dances. And so they will show it to us in a concert.
Shortly after, we will enter the dirt tracks that are still used today by the semi-nomadic communities of the desert and that were once used by the motorcycles and cars of the Paris-Dakar rally. We will do it with our 4×4, between abandoned kohl mines and ruined villages, but we will reach one of those settlements still inhabited by local people. Here we will meet with families who will tell us about their ancestral way of life, where the rhythm and priorities are different.
After this brief but enriching experience, we will return to Merzouga, stopping at strategic points to contemplate the sand dunes from a panoramic view. In Merzouga we will have dinner and sleep in a very charming hotel, with an architecture and decoration inspired by everything we will have discovered these days in the desert.

Day 9
Merzouga - Ziz Valley - Ifrane - Fez
On the ninth day of our journey, we bid farewell to the Sahara Desert and the vast southern expanse beyond the Atlas Mountains. This leg of the trip covers many kilometers, offering ever-changing landscapes beyond the window as we travel north.
Our route follows the Ziz Valley, leading us into the Middle Atlas Mountains, where we ascend through rugged, arid slopes. The descent, however, reveals a striking contrast—the mountain’s northern face is far more humid, fostering lush, native forests.
One of our key stops is Ifrane National Park, often called the Monkey Forest due to its thriving community of Barbary macaques. These primates roam freely among towering Atlas cedars, creating a dense and vibrant woodland that we will explore on foot and by road.
Further along, we arrive in Ifrane, a picturesque mountain town perched at 1,700 meters above sea level. Known for its heavy winter snowfall, Ifrane features Alpine-style architecture, with steeply pitched roofs reminiscent of villages in the Alps or Alaska. The stark contrast between these European-style buildings and the adobe structures of the morning highlights Morocco’s incredible diversity.
As the day winds down, we reach Fez, a city best explored at a relaxed pace. For now, we settle into our riad and rest, preparing for a deeper discovery of Fez the following morning.

Day 10
Fez
Fes is more than just a city at Morocco’s geographical center—it is the cultural and spiritual heart of the nation. With deep religious, historical, and artistic significance, it stands as an Imperial City and a symbol of Moroccan identity.
In the morning, a certified guide will lead us on a tour through Fes’s rich heritage. Our exploration may include iconic mosques (Karaouine, Andalusians), civil landmarks (Nejjarine Fountain and Square), artisan quarters (famous tanneries), historic medersas (Bou Inania, Attarine), the mellah (Jewish quarter), and the Royal Palace esplanade. The exact route will adapt to the pace of our walk and the medina’s daily rhythm.
The afternoon is free for further discoveries—whether revisiting morning highlights, exploring museums like Dar Batha or Borj Nord, or indulging in Fes's renowned craftsmanship. The city is Morocco’s artisanal capital, offering exquisite ceramics, jewellery, textiles, and other handmade treasures.
As the day ends, we return to our peaceful riad in the medina for another restful night.

Day 11
Fes - Meknes - Rabat
This day is dedicated to Imperial Cities, as we depart from Fes to explore Meknes and Rabat, both rich in history and well connected by road.
Our first stop, Meknes, is a city of grand architecture and deep historical significance. Its golden age came under Sultan Moulay Ismail, who transformed it into his capital. His spectacular mausoleum and the remnants of his royal palace still stand today. We’ll also admire the city's imposing walls and monumental gates, including the iconic Bab el Mansour.
From Meknes, we continue to Rabat, Morocco’s modern capital and home to key national landmarks. We’ll visit the Royal Palace (Dar el Makhzen), residence of the Alawite king, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, honoring the nation’s first independent monarch. Nearby, the Hassan Tower, an Almohad-era masterpiece, stands as Rabat’s most historic monument. To complete our journey, the Kasbah of the Udayas offers both history and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Bou Regreg River, and the neighboring city of Salé.
By evening, we settle into a charming riad in Rabat, reflecting on a day filled with history and discovery.

Day 12
Rabat - Chaouen
On this twelfth day, our journey takes us from the Atlantic coast to the Rif Mountains, leaving behind the bustling capital of Rabat for the charm of Chefchaouen. Covering about 250 km northward, this drive leads us to one of Morocco’s most picturesque destinations.
Upon arrival, we’ll immediately see why Chefchaouen, often called the "Blue Pearl", is so special. Its whitewashed houses, painted in soothing shades of blue, create a serene and enchanting atmosphere. Nestled between two mountain slopes, the medina’s winding alleys, staircases, hidden arches, and scenic viewpoints add to its magical charm.
A perfect starting point for exploration is Uta el-Hammam Square, the medina’s lively heart, where locals gather beneath a towering Atlas cedar. Overlooking the square stands the 14th-century kasbah, now home to the Ethnographic Museum, showcasing traditional crafts, tools, and historical artifacts.
The day is yours to explore at your own pace, soaking in the town’s relaxed atmosphere before retiring to your centrally located riad for a peaceful night’s rest.

Day 13
Chaouen - Tetouan - Tangier
On the penultimate day of the tour, we’ll experience what sets this trip apart from shorter itineraries: a visit to two remarkable cities in the north of Morocco—Tetouan and Tangier—each offering unique attractions.
Our first stop is Tetouan, a city with deep ties to Spain. It served as the capital of the Spanish Protectorate in the 20th century, and its modern district, or Ensanche, is inspired by Andalusian architectural styles. The UNESCO-listed medina, known for its well-preserved structures like the city walls, the Caliph’s Palace, and the zagüías, is a standout. The predominant white color of the city, coupled with its location on a mountainside, has earned it the nickname "White Dove."
After exploring Tetouan, we’ll head to Tangier, one of Morocco's most cosmopolitan cities due to its proximity to Europe. Situated at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier boasts beautiful Mediterranean beaches ideal for swimming when the weather permits. Its medina and kasbah are full of charm, and the city has long been a haven for artists and intellectuals, particularly in the 20th century.
Your final night of rest will be at a riad in Tangier, providing a perfect end to this two-week journey.

Day 14
Tangier - Tangier Airport
The timing of your return flight will dictate the schedule for your final day in Morocco. At the designated time, we will transfer you from the hotel to Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport. Our services will conclude at the airport terminal, with the hope that this will be just one of many journeys together. We look forward to the possibility of welcoming you on another trip, whether in Morocco or to other destinations where our agency operates.
